Ruda Echeverría’s project, The Oldest Trick in the Book, presents an installation that explores the intersection of memory, identity, and knowledge. A library of fictional books, each containing hidden compartments filled with collaged objects—what Echeverría terms “emotional contraband”—represents alternate realities, blending personal memory with imagined worlds and ideas sparked by reading.
The collection, consisting of at least one hundred titles across various genres, challenges conventional notions of knowledge accumulation, proposing instead that knowledge is fluid and ever-changing. Visitors are invited to engage with the installation by exploring thematic dictionaries and contributing new titles to the collection, creating a dynamic interaction between the artwork and its audience.
At the heart of the installation is a serene reading space equipped with all the comforts of a quiet library, offering a space for reflection and immersion in Echeverría’s fictional worlds. Through collage, ceramics, and found objects, the artist decontextualizes familiar images, imbuing them with new significance and prompting us to reflect on the irrationality of the world we live in.
